The Three Myths of Success and What it Really Takes

myths of success

The Myths of Success have been fed to many of us for years. Like all myths they hold a kernel of truth but fall far from being absolutes.

Have you ever attended a “Success” event of any kind? I’ve been involved in hundreds of seminars, conferences and training programs through the years. Often there tends to be a consistent theme, “secret” or even law. TO BE SUCCESSFUL YOU MUST:

Myths of Success
  • Change your attitude
  • Get motivated
  • Be inspired

But what if I told you… extraordinary results can occur independently of the above three factors.

Confessions of a 51-year-old “Motivational” Speaker

After over two decades in the success and motivation industry, there are still times when I feel unmotivated, uninspired, and have a bad attitude. If this never happens to you feel free to stop reading. On the other hand if your mental and emotional state is ever less than optimal, you may want to continue.

What it Doesn’t Take

Attitude. Google “control your attitude” sometime. You’ll find articles entitled: Attitude is Everything, Your Attitude Controls Your Life, The Only Thing You Can Fully Control in Your Life… REALLY?

Has your attitude ever been out of control? More importantly have you ever taken control of your life with a less than optimal attitude? I can resoundingly answer YES and YES, respectively.

“You can succeed with a bad attitude and fail with a good one.”

Stever Robbins

Motivation is not a prerequisite. Heck, people have referred to me a “motivational speaker” for over 20 years. I’m not offended by it, I simply believe it’s inaccurate. Motivation is great. I highly recommend it. Helpful? Yes. Valuable? Absolutely! But NOT a requirement for success.

Myths of Success

Q: What’s the hardest part of the workout for most people?

A: Getting to the gym.

Doug Grady

Inspiration literally means “Spirit within.” Guess what, Spirit is ALWAYS within, but not always easily accessible. And you don’t need to feel inspired to work out. Or lead generate. Or study.

What it Really Takes

The Power of CHOICE. Inspiration may come and go. Motivation may be a distant memory. Hold on to your bad attitude if you must. CHOICE supersedes all of these. Choice is available to you… right now, right now and right now. It’s not dependent on the past, or feelings, or attitude, or motivation. Make a choice right now to change the course of your life.

You don’t need to feel inspired to work out. You need to get your uninspired butt to the gym and start moving some inanimate objects around. Unmotivated to make that call?

Unmotivatedly pick up the phone, put your finger on a few numbers, allow the phone to ring and try not be an idiot if someone answers.

Bad attitude about studying for your next designation? Just open the book. Slam it shut if you must. Then open it again and get to work.

I strongly encourage you to consistently cultivate a positive, powerful attitude. Create conditions favorable for inspiration and welcome it when it comes. Seek out motivation. But stop using the absence of these as excuses for not moving toward success.

Three Steps to Debunk the Myths of Success

  1. Think of a time when were you “unmotivated” to do something but did it anyway. How exactly did you do this? How can you apply this to other areas of your life?
  2. I just need to be motivated to ___________________. What will you choose in this area?
  3. Make one simple choice right now to change the course of your life. Repeat often. Inspiration, motivation and a great attitude will follow.

Success is a choice. Thht’s the truth. Choose powerfully.
