Are you trying to do too much?

Are you trying to do too much?

I speak with solopreneurs, entrepreneurs, and sales people all over the country. One of the things that keeps coming up is a sense of overwhelm, that they just can’t put anything else on their plate.

I get it. There’s so much that has to get done in business. But it doesn’t all have to get done by you.

Recently traveling between speaking engagements in the Southeast I listened to a podcast by Jane Atkinson interviewing Dan Miller, a successful entrepreneur. He revealed that’s there’s probably 25 or 30 things that have to get done in his business but he does only two or three and does them really well. He gets other people to do those other things that he’s not exactly suited for.

It was like a breath of fresh air, because for me there are so many times that I feel like I’m trying to do too much. There are resources, people, and websites… you don’t have to do it alone. Even if you don’t have a huge budget, or income or revenue; even if you’re a startup you can find resources and people to help you. You can barter with people, trading your expertise for their expertise.trying to do too much

Find people who can do in their sleep what keeps you up at night.

Recently I had lunch with a man I met while sharing a stage in San Francisco. He is an online marketing expert. This man can do in his sleep what keeps me up at night. And you know what, I can do some things in my sleep that he needs and his business. There’s always the potential to create arrangement where someone helps you and return for you helping them.

There are companies out there like fiverr that provide very cost effective graphic design and marketing, and a host of other services. Companies like upwork provide cost effective outsourcing services for just about anything you can imagine. For a whole bunch more resources, websites and tools visit my friend Brad Stevens website entreholic.

Do yourself a favor – check in and look at the things that you’re doing that you either don’t want to do, you don’t like doing, you’re not good at, or that somebody else can be doing. And focus on what you and only you can do. For me this is connecting with people, content development, and delivering that content passionately in a way that engages people. What is it for you?

Stop trying to do too much. Find a way to minimize or eliminate everything else through available resources and other people. Let me know how it goes.
